Canva’s Magic AI Studio: The do’s and don’ts of getting people to use your shiny new AI features

What’s the magic word to ruin your new AI feature? ‘Friction’

TLDR: WATCH THE VIDEO (click above)

You and your team just built an AI feature. You’ve spent time and money on it and now you want people to use it! Makes sense. How should you introduce it?

Luckily, Canva has shown us what NOT to do—and also what TO do.

What not to do: Go heavy on opt-in. Every click= drop-off. And for Canva, it took me 3 clicks. 3!!! These aren't just physical clicks; they’re psychological speed bumps that can stop even the most eager users in their tracks.

What to do: While you’re designing in the app, they give you small ways to optimize using their automated features. This is where Canva shines.

This aligns with what we advocate at Irrational Labs. It's about showing users the magic of AI, making it easy for them to try it without making a decision: ’Do you want to try this AI thing I built?’ 💬

Well done, Canva. Now please give me more magic and less mayhem.

3 insights from this teardown:

💡 Effective AI integration requires balancing innovation with user familiarity

💡 Reduce click-through barriers to enhance user exploration and engagement with new features

💡 Clear communication is the real magic—guiding users through AI functionalities can prevent user overwhelm and drop-off
